Common Space:

a Sunday Morning Dialogue

LEADERS:Chris Estus, Darrell Smith
DAY:Sundays beginning Aug. 16
TIME:11 a.m.
LOCATION:W100-101

Join us in W100-101 (the seminar room) at 11 a.m. for a weekly dialogue and exploration of the biblical stories—both the ones you know and love and the ones that seem to confound and confuse. This is not a lecture or a book study.  There is no homework or assigned reading.  Through active and participatory conversation, we will get to know each other and learn together as we wrestle with the questions that exist on the tips of our tongues and in the depths of our hearts.

Steal Like an Artist:

Discover Your Creative Spirit

LEADER:Cristian Ortiz
DAY:Wednesdays beginning Sept. 2
TIME:5 p.m.
LOCATION:AHUMC Parlor

Join AHUMC Communications Associate Director Cristian Ortiz for this dialogue around ten transformative principles that will help you discover your artistic side and build a more creative life.

Together, we will learn to embrace influence, school ourselves through the work of others, and follow our interests wherever they take us. We will find the space to be wild and daring and forget the old cliché about doing what we know. Instead, we can write the book we want to read, create the art we want to behold, or make the movie we want to watch.

Childcare is available by request.

LOCATION:W100-101

The Holy Spirit is God's active presence and power at work in the world and in our lives. Through the Spirit, we are transformed, led, empowered, and guided in our faith journey. Jesus promised his followers that the Spirit would come alongside them as comforter and counselor, empowering them to transform the world.

Join pastor Donna Strieb as we explore what Scripture teaches about God's Spirit—from the Hebrew Bible through Jesus' promises in the Gospels, the powerful Pentecost experience in Acts, and the rich teachings found in the New Testament letters.

Women's Ministry:
Mattering

LEADER:Priscilla MacDougall
DAY:Tuesdays beginning Sept. 15
TIME:6 p.m.
LOCATION:AHUMC Parlor

This group was formed to offer women an opportunity to build community and grow together spiritually and emotionally. Each semester we choose a different book to study and discuss.

Join Rev. Priscilla MacDougall this fall as we study Jennifer Breheny Wallace's new book Mattering. The feeling that we are valued and have an opportunity to add value is a core human need, as essential to our well-being as food and water. And yet, in today’s world, that fundamental need is going unmet, with perilous consequences.

As mental and social health crises surge, we often blame social media, the pace of modern life, and polarizing politics. But beneath these issues lies a deeper crisis: “An erosion of mattering.” Together, we will explore a clear road map and actionable takeaways that unlock the powerful force within ourselves and help to build cultures of mattering in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

THE NEW HAPPY on "Curiosity"

We think that the best thing we can do is have all of the answers.

But what would it look like if we were more interested in the questions?

Try using one of these phrases to tap into the curiousity and humility of the beginner's mind:

  • "I don't know. What do you think?"
  • "I value your insight and knowledge. Can you share more about that with me?"
  • "How are you feeling about this, right now?"
  • "I was thinking about [topic] and remembered it's something in which you are interested. Will you tell me a bit about it?"
  • "Do you have any suggestions for how I can learn more about that?"
  • "How would you approach this?"
  • "What was it like when [event] happened for you?"
  • "How can I help you?"

LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN HELP

We cannot do life alone.
God is relationship and we come from God. We live within community—we need it and it needs us.
